In the closed world of an elite boarding school in Pennsylvania, in Hudwell, the student body is governed by five factions. Seventeen-year-old Sierra Summers manages the most dominant band of spades with unshakable composure as they cater to the most classic vices, serving students with mouthwatering illegal alcohol and drugs. Tensions between the two factions escalate, and when Serra's best friend, Maxi in the right hand, is distracted by a new love, Serra takes over from a protégé obsessed with Palomar, who passes on the wisdom of managing the school to Palomar. But as graduation approaches and Palomar proves that she is a very fast learner, Serra's fears turn to insidiousness as she struggles to overcome the loss of self-defined control.　　In her close-up debut, writer-director Tayarisha Poe immerses us in a high-level depiction of teenage politics. This mesmerizing character study encapsulates what an intoxicating power it can be for a teenage girl who keenly senses the threat of rejection. Exciting newcomer Lowe Simone's performance perfectly exemplifies Serra's impeccable command in front of the public, as well as the internal fears and uncertainties that drive Serra.
